Spring is a good time for a makeup pick-me-up, and there are plenty of ways to freshen your beauty routine that don’t involve spending hours or fortunes at the cosmetics counter.
Local freelance makeup artist Joy Randall recently demonstrated a few key makeup updates she’s using this spring, with the help of models Felicia Bittle and Stephanie Foreman.
All work well on different kinds of skin tones. They emphasize fresh, natural looks that highlight good skin care. There’s less emphasis this season on the shiny, dewy look in years past and more on a matte, sun-kissed-looking tone that looks as natural as possible.
“The key,” Randall says, “is looking like you woke up looking just like this.”
Some women reach for white eye liner when looking to brighten tired eyes, but Randall says peach eye liner is a softer, more natural way to enhance eyes.
Using a pencil, Randall glides the color on the upper and lower lash lines closest to the whites of the eye, in the “water line.”
“When you have a nice smooth pencil, it will feel like it’s gliding along,” Randall says.

“KITTY” EYE
If you like the drama of a cat eye but want to take it down a notch for daytime, Randall suggests a toned-down version that gives the illusion of a slight lift to the eye.
With a fine brush, Randall makes a thin, short line coming out of the corner of both eyes, slanted slightly upward. She checks to make sure the lines are even on both sides before proceeding to line the rest of the eye, getting as close to the lash line as possible.
“It’s a nice, simple way to add a little drama,” Randall says.
BRONZER
If buying bronzer this spring, opt for one with a matte finish and skip the ones with glitter and shimmer, Randall says.
The goal of your bronzer this season, she says, should be to add depth to your skin tone and a slight sun-kissed look.
“It can be a replacement for blush, where you don’t want to add color, but you want to add dimension,” she says.
Be mindful of where you apply it – she has clients smile when she brushes it on so it lands on the apples of the cheeks, where the sun deepens the skin naturally, as well as the forehead – and be careful not to buy a bronzer that’s too dark, creating a mask effect. Often it’s good to match bronzer to the skin on the upper chest, just below the neck, Randall says.
